  • AFED Team on Environmental Law Panel in Washington, 13 - 16 February 2012: AFED participated in a consultation panel of experts on Environmental Law and Regulation in the Arab World. The meetings were hosted by the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) at the US Department of Commerce in Washington between 13-16 February. AFED delegation included Secretary General Najib Saab, Program Manager Bashar Zeitoon, accompanied by experts who contributed to legal and governance aspects of AFED reports, Dr. Ibrahim Abdelgelil, Director of Environment Program at Arabian Gulf University, and water law specialist Dr. Tareq Majzoub. A background paper on environmental challenges in the Arab region, prepared by legal adviser Farah Killidar, primarily drew on AFED's annual reports. The first phase of the project covers Iraq.

 

  • AFED at UNEP's Global Ministerial Forum, 22 February 2012, Nairobi - Kenya: AFED participated in the Global Ministerial Environment Forum held at the Headquarters of UNEP in Nairobi. AFED SG spoke on prospects of green economy in the Arab countries, representing the Arab region at a plenary ministerial panel. The panel, attended by representatives of 162 governments, debated green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. Alongside Saab, who represented the Arab region, the panel included Janez poto─Źnik, European Commissioner for the Environment, and Edna Molewa, Minister of Water and Environment in South Africa. AFED participated in the coordination meetings of Arab ministers attending the Forum, and the SG concluded cooperation agreements with several agencies.

 

  • AFED Green Economy Report: The World Bank Center for Mediterranean Integration in Marseille has published the final draft of its report entitled "towards a Green Growth in the Mediterranean Countries." This effort is lead by the World Bank, the French Agency for Development (AFD), the European Bank of Investment (EIB), and Plan Bleu (UNEP/MAP). AFED report on Green Economy in a Changing Arab World was used as the primary source. The report will be released in April.

 

  • AFED Report and Conference 2012: A team of senior experts started preparing the analytical part of AFED 2012 annual report. The subject of the report is "Ecological Footprint and Sustainability Options in the Arab Countries". The report will be presented and discussed during AFED annual conference which will be held on 15 - 16 November 2012 in Beirut, Lebanon. AFED has commissioned the world pioneering Global Footprint Network (GFN), to prepare an ecological footprint atlas of the Arab countries, based on the most recent data. The Atlas studies natural resources of every country, and on sub-regional and regional basis. AFED expert team will be analyzing sustainability options based on population, production, consumption and various development patterns.

 

  • Consultation meetings of AFED Report 2012: Prior to report publication, AFED is organizing CONSULTATION MEETINGS in order to give report authors the opportunity to deliberate their findings before a group of experts. These meetings will be held in Cairo, Beirut and Amman on 25, 27 and 30 April respectively. AFED members will be invited to send representatives.

 

  • AFED Environmental Education Handbook: Work is proceeding to make AFED Environmental Education Handbook available online for launching in April. The online version will provide free access to text, graphics, plays, songs and documentaries. All audiovisual material will also be accessible via YOUTUBE. AFED has been negotiating joint agreements for the implementation of its education program with several regional and international parties.
