Arab Environment 2010: WATER Climate Change Report 2009
May 2010

EcoVentures, a Dubai-based emissions reduction firm, released a report showing that companies in the region who have implemented strategies to reduce their carbon emissions have realized substantial benefits from their efforts. Benefits of creating a carbon strategy cited by companies centered around cost-savings, brand visibility and awareness, customer acquisition and retention, employee satisfaction and compliance with regulation.

The report, entitled "Improving the Bottom Line: Corporate Carbon Reduction Efforts across the Gulf," which is available in English and Arabic, summarizes the results of in-depth interviews of 10 companies in the region and secondary research conducted by EcoVentures. Companies interviewed include Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Dubai Chamber), Enviromena, Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa, Philips and Sesam. The interviews were administered in-person, by telephone and over email and explored companies' efforts to reduce their carbon footprints and the effects this had on their operations.

The report shows benefits experienced by the companies in a variety of areas. For example, the leading solar developer Enviromena has seen an increase in brand visibility and customer acquisition from their carbon reduction strategies. "Our multifaceted CSR efforts, including our decision to offset our corporate carbon emissions and become a Carbon Neutral company, show our clients, staff, investors and other corporations Enviromena's commitment to developing a green workplace," said Enviromena CEO Sami Khoreibi.

Survey respondents, who have listed over 40 different carbon-reduction strategies that their organizations are undertaking, have also mentioned benefits for their firms in the area of brand awareness and visibility.

The report concludes with a primer on how firms can get started in creating carbon reduction strategies that will allow them to realize these benefits.
