"Global environment lost a giant today. Mostafa Kamal Tolba passed away this morning. Mentor to me and many others, he was founder of environmental diplomacy, who served for 18 years as head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He was the first Board Chairman of Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED), and with him I co-edited its first report on the state of Arab environment in 2008 and the report on impact of climate change on Arab countries in 2009. I was fortunate to work under his leadership at UNEP between 1977-1979, and as adviser and associate thereafter. Born on 22 December 1922, he passed away at hospital in Geneva early today, 28 March 2016. He is survived by wife Manal and sons Kamel and Ibrahim. RIP".
